What’s in it for me? How is putting me first going to help?
So often I consult with people who find it difficult
to put themselves first. Maybe it’s the belief that’s
been implanted of “it’s better to give than to receive” or
the polarization we have with narcissism. Whatever the case,
NOT putting yourself first is not helpful to anyone.
The old airplane saying “put on your own oxygen mask before helping others”
really does exemplify this idea.
But what if it’s just not in your style to go “hardcore” on yourself?
Well, if that’s the case, and this has been a bit of a battle for you, then you
are going to need to leverage others around you. Maybe start asking the questions,
“how is taking care of me going to help my spouse?“
“how is taking care of me going to help my family?”
“how is taking care of me going to help my business?”
“how is taking care of me going to help my kids?”
“how is taking care of me going to help my team of workers?”
By starting to stretch your impact on others around you, may provide you
with some much needed leverage to start putting yourself first and valuing
the idea that taking care of you actually is the best thing you can do.
Go get ’em,
